Houthi Ceasefire: Diego Garcia Remains a Hub of Activity

The U.S.seems to be pulling back several B-2 Spirit bombers from diego Garcia, a key naval facility in the British Indian Ocean. On May 9, three of these aircraft were spotted being refueled as they made their way across Northern Australia, heading back to Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

This withdrawal likely follows the Houthi proclamation about halting attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, despite their ongoing missile strikes against Israel.

The recent agreement mediated by Oman between the U.S. and Houthis included a demand for an end to attacks on Israel—a request that was turned down by the Houthis. Nevertheless, Washington accepted this stance and stepped back from its air campaign without achieving its goal of curbing all external missile and drone operations from the Houthis.

Despite pressure from U.S. airstrikes leading them into negotiations, the Houthis have managed to retain enough of their military capabilities to continue striking at Israeli targets—framing this as a testament to their resilience in supporting Palestine.

This deal also allows them enough firepower to quickly resume attacks on maritime traffic if they choose to accuse America of backing israeli counterattacks. Shipping companies are likely aware of this lingering threat and may opt for longer routes around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope due to safety concerns—especially sence there’s already an oversupply issue affecting shipping capacity globally.
