Rescue Operation Underway: Salvage Tug Mobilized to Assist Maersk Vessel Stranded Post-Explosion

A Norwegian salvage tug has finally reached teh Maersk Sana, nearly three weeks after the ship was left adrift in the Atlantic due to an engine room explosion that injured three crew members. The incident took place on april 28 while the Maersk Sana was en route from newark, USA, to singapore. At that moment, it was about 254 nautical miles east of Bermuda when disaster struck.

The explosion wreaked havoc in the engine room, knocking out the main propulsion system. Since then, the vessel had been limping along with auxiliary power and could only maneuver slightly using its side thrusters.

Three crew members sustained injuries; one received treatment onboard while two others were transferred to a different Maersk ship heading for Bermuda. One of them was treated and released there. Unluckily, another crew member suffered critical injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital in the U.S., where he remains in critical but stable condition under advanced medical care.Weighing in at 102,000 tonnes with a capacity of 8,450 TEU containers, Maersk reported that their vessel was “safely adrift” as it awaited help. The company assured everyone that they were keeping a close eye on things and noted that calm seas helped manage this precarious situation.

Interestingly enough, just twelve days before this mishap occurred on April 16th during an inspection in Charleston, South Carolina—everything checked out fine according to the United States Coast Guard’s report.

After several days filled with uncertainty and public concern mounting over safety issues at sea, Norwegian salvage tug Sea1 Ruby arrived at last early on may 16th.

This anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel boasts a deadweight tonnage of 3,800 tons and is operated by Sea1 Offshore (formerly Siem Offshore). It set sail from Bergen on May 4th after making a pit stop at Ponta Delgada in the azores before heading toward Maersk Sana’s location.Despite being over 3,000 nautical miles away from its destination—Sea1 Ruby faced some criticism for not opting for closer tugs available along America’s East Coast or nearby ports. However! Maersk defended their choice by emphasizing they wanted to ensure they selected an appropriate vessel rather than rushing into decisions without proper consideration—a spokesperson highlighted their commitment towards getting it right first time around!

Now underway towing Maersk Sana towards Freeport Bahamas—a journey spanning approximately 900 nautical miles—the tug is expected to take about seven days given current conditions with speeds averaging around five knots! They anticipate reaching port by late May!

Reports also indicate technicians along with spare parts are being ferried aboard via Sea1 Ruby as part of recovery efforts; equipped with notable capabilities including twenty-eight thousand brake horsepower alongside bollard pull strength rated at three hundred ten tons—this tug can handle significant towing operations like this one effortlessly!

Maersk has initiated an inquiry into what caused both explosion & fire incidents while maintaining interaction lines open between all relevant authorities involved throughout process ensuring safety remains paramount moving forward—they’re also providing updates aimed at minimizing disruptions within customer supply chains too!

The Maersk Sana operates alongside other vessels within similar size categories under Gemini Cooperation—a shipping alliance formed between Hapag-Lloyd & themselves focusing primarily upon routes connecting Asia directly back North America!
