A Malta-flagged container ship, Safeen Prestige, was hit by a projectile north of Oman while sailing east through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday.
The strike caused a fire in the engine room, forcing all 24 crew members, including 21 Egyptians and three Ukrainians, to abandon the ship safely. No injuries were reported.
The Safeen Prestige (IMO: 9593517), a 23,425-dwt ship built in 2013, was struck above the waterline at the stern, about two nautical miles north of Oman at 3:09 PM Malta time.
The fire was contained to the engine room, and there was no environmental damage.
Shipping tracker Marine Traffic confirmed the vessel was en route from Ghantoot port, UAE, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Maritime experts, including Vanguard Tech and WK Webster, said the incident may involve salvage, cargo recovery, and general average claims.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) received the report and issued a warning to vessels transiting the region.
