A U.S. Navy warship believed to be carrying Marines and sailors to the Middle East is nearing the Malacca Strait off Singapore, according to maritime tracking data seen on Tuesday.
The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli left Okinawa on March 11 and is heading toward the region at a time of rising tensions between the United States and Iran.
The USS Tripoli is based in Sasebo, Japan. It is about 850 feet long and displaces around 45,000 tons.
The ship works like a small aircraft carrier and can operate F-35 stealth fighter jets and MV-22 Osprey aircraft. It also carries landing craft that allow troops and equipment to move from sea to shore.
The vessel usually leads an amphibious ready group, which often includes USS New Orleans and USS San Diego, although their presence alongside Tripoli has not been confirmed.
