The U.S Navy is developing a new missile which will be cost-effective and travel at four times the speed of sound in a move towards procurement of advanced, but affordable, weapon systems.
The new missile, called the Air-Launched Rapid Response Missile, is being developed by Guide Tech, a subsidiary of Palladyne AI, which was awarded the contract just this month.
The ALRRM will exceed Mach 4 speeds, travelling at 3,069 miles per hour over 350 nautical miles, thanks to its air-breathing solid fuel ramjet (SFRJ) engine.
It would not require onboard oxidisers, allowing the missile to be lightweight and offer extended range compared to rocket-based weapon systems.
Ben Wolff, Palladyne AI CEO and president, said that according to the 2025 National Security Strategy, the US must build cost-effective missiles with high-performance strike capabilities.
The ALRRM will meet these requirements, per the company. It will be small and compact, yet it will accommodate a 150-lb warhead. It will also be compatible with fighter aircraft, especially the fifth-generation platforms.
