Greek universities have declined in 2024-25, dropping in the world rankings, according to Webometrics. Out of the 24 Greek universities included in the classification system, only four improved their spot: the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Western Macedonia, the University of Thessaly, and the Greek Open University.
The remaining twenty Greek universities were relegated in the world ranking list, leading to the country’s average plummeting by 12.1% (-179 spots) for 2024-25.
According to the data, Greek colleges also lost ground, as the average WR (World Rank) of 23 educational institutions ranked by Webometrics lost 1,661 places, or a 10.3% drop.
Greece’s military higher education institutions improved their global standing over the past year, bucking the downward trend seen in both universities and private colleges.
All three Higher Military Educational Institutions (ASEI)—the Hellenic Army Academy, the Hellenic Naval Academy, and the Hellenic Air Force Academy—recorded gains in their global positions.
As a result, the group’s average worldwide ranking improved by 14% in 2024–2025, rising 1,173 places from 8,371 in July 2024 to 7,198 in July 2025.
