Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Iran, describing Russia as a “loyal friend and reliable partner” during what he called a period of severe hardship for Tehran.

In a message marking Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, Putin extended congratulations to Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Kremlin said he expressed confidence that the Iranian people would overcome current challenges, emphasizing Russia’s continued backing amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

Russia has sharply criticized the conflict, blaming U.S. and Israeli actions for pushing the Middle East into crisis and contributing to a broader global energy shock. Moscow has also condemned the killing of Iran’s previous supreme leader, calling it a “cynical” act.

However, the depth of Russia’s support remains uncertain. Some Iranian sources have suggested that Moscow has provided limited tangible assistance during the conflict, despite its strong rhetoric of solidarity.

Reports of a potential diplomatic trade-off between Russia and the United States have added to the ambiguity. According to media reports, Moscow allegedly proposed halting intelligence-sharing with Iran in exchange for Washington ending support for Ukraine—claims the Kremlin has dismissed as false.
