Millions of customers are expected to receive payouts from a $50 million settlement over a 23andMe customer data security breach in October 2023. The payments are due to be sent out in the coming weeks.
Here's what to know about the upcoming deadline to claim and how to qualify.
When is the deadline to claim part of 23andMe settlement?
The last day to file a settlement claim form is Tuesday, Feb. 17, according to the settlement website.
Eligible customers received emails this month from Kroll Settlement Administration LCC, a class action settlement administrator. Some customers could be eligible for payouts of up to $10,000 if their claims are "extraordinary."
What does the 23andMe settlement stem from?
The breach of 23andMe's databases resulted in the theft of personal information of roughly 6.4 million United States residents. The company announced the breach on Oct. 6, 2023.
This class notice was initially filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and it is now pending in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
The 23andMe settlement website states the company has denied any wrongdoing. Still, 23andMe agreed to settle to avoid trial. The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, and Chapter 11 proceedings are still ongoing. The company has since rebranded to "Chrome."
Who qualifies for the 23andMe settlement?
Anyone who was a customer between May 1, 2023, and Oct. 1, 2023, resided in the U.S. during this time, and received notice from 23andMe that their personal information was compromised is considered a settlement class member.
People may be eligible for a cash payment and other benefits from the class action settlement, including up to $10,000 for extraordinary claims, up to $165 for health information claims, an estimated $100 for statutory cash claims and five years of privacy, medical shield and genetic monitoring.
