Monroe County Sheriff’s Office didn’t demand bitcoin from you
MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a familiar phone scam.
According to authorities, scammers are calling victims and claiming to be members of law enforcement. The scammer tells the victim they either have a warrant for their arrest or they failed to appear for jury duty or a court appearance.

The scammer tells the victim that they would be arrested if a fine is not paid with Bitcoin.
Law enforcement will never call someone and demand payment. Anyone who is contacted by someone posing as a government agency that tries to get them to pay in cryptocurrency or a gift card is urged to contact the actual agency directly.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be law enforcement, do not give in to pressure, avoid engaging in conversation, and never provide personal or financial information.
More than $9.3 billion was lost nationally due to cryptocurrency scams last year, a significant increase. Michiganders lost $126,330,606 in cryptocurrency scams in 2024, more than double the year prior.
