Vard lands new hybrid SOV order

Vard has signed a fresh deal with North Star for two new hybrid Service Operation Vessels (SOVs). The contract marks the ninth and tenth vessels ordered by North Star from the Norwegian shipbuilder, part of the Fincantieri Group.

The SOVs will support offshore wind operations and reflect both companies’ shared push for greener, more efficient shipping. Built on the proven VARD 4 19 design, each vessel will be 87.5 meters long, 19.5 meters wide, and accommodate up to 120 people.

Also, both ships will run on hybrid battery systems and be methanol-ready, an important step toward cutting maritime emissions.

Additionally, key features include motion-compensated gangways with elevators, safe boat landing systems, and advanced energy management tech. Vard Electro will deliver the full SeaQ power and control package, while Vard Interiors will handle onboard comfort systems.

Moreover, the first hull will be built in Romania, with final outfitting and delivery from Norway in late 2027. The second vessel will be built entirely at Vard’s Vietnam yard, with delivery expected in Q4 2028.

North Star owns the largest UK-operated fleet working the North Sea. The company plans to launch 40 hybrid offshore wind ships by 2040. Since 2022, North Star has been backed by Partners Group, acting on behalf of its clients.

This latest order deepens the long-standing partnership between Vard and North Star and underscores a clear commitment to cleaner, future-ready maritime solutions.
