Imabari Shipbuilding to take majority stake in Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine

Imabari Shipbuilding and Kanadevia have agreed on a share transfer involving Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME). Imabari will acquire part of Kanadevia’s shares in HZME.

Change in ownership structure

After the transaction:

  • Imabari Shipbuilding: 60% (up from 35%)

  • Kanadevia: 40% (down from 65%)

This makes Imabari the majority shareholder.

About HZME

HZME was established in November 2022 as a joint venture between Imabari and Kanadevia.
It focuses on:

  • Marine engine supply

  • Sales and service networks

  • Material procurement

  • Development for carbon-neutral technologies

HZME took over Kanadevia’s marine engine business in April 2023.

Strategic rationale

Both companies aim to:

  • Strengthen competitiveness in a changing shipbuilding market

  • Improve mass production systems

  • Accelerate decarbonisation-related development

Regulatory approvals required

The transaction is subject to competition and regulatory approvals in Japan and overseas. The deal will close after all required clearances are obtained.

Industry impact

The companies say the deal will reinforce Japan’s shipbuilding industry and deepen collaboration on next-generation marine engines.
