On 23 March, a fire broke out on patrol boat at the Government Dockyard on Stonecutters Island in Hong Kong sending thick plumes of smoke across Victoria Harbour and leading to the suspension of all onshore ship repair activities.

As reported, the fire started around 5 pm inside a maintenance shed where the vessel was undergoing repairs, producing dense black smoke that was visible from both sides of the harbor. About eight workers nearby evacuated the area on their own.

In addition, firefighters responded promptly, bringing the fire under control with two water jets, supported by a fireboat and marine police vessels. The Fire Services Department advised residents affected by the smoke and odor to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

“Members of the public who are being affected by the smoke and an unusual odour carried by the wind are advised to stay indoors, close their doors and windows, and stay calm,” Hong Kong media highlighted on their announcement.

By approximately 6 pm, the fire had been fully extinguished and no injuries were reported. A preliminary investigation indicates that the blaze may have been accidentally triggered by welding activities, with no evidence of criminal involvement at this time.

The Marine Department confirmed that it was alerted to the fire by workers from a contracted maintenance provider. A department spokesperson said the vessel involved is a 32-meter Customs patrol boat that had been docked for repairs since early March.

All onshore ship maintenance projects at the dockyard have been suspended pending a thorough review of safety procedures.
