Godby Shipping has ordered two new methanol-ready RORO vessels from CIMC Raffles shipyard in China, with option for two additional vessels.

The order was placed on 11 February 2026 as part of the company’s efforts to modernize its fleet. Environmental performance has been a key focus in the vessel design. The ships will feature shore power connections and onboard batteries, enabling emission free operations while in port and during short voyages. The battery systems will be scalable for future upgrades and may be complemented by alternative emission free power sources.

The vessels will also be prepared for waste heat recovery systems and alternative fuels, including methanol.

The new vessels will measure 125 meters in length and 24 meters in beam, with a trailer capacity of approximately 1,700 lane meters and a cargo capacity of about 6,200 metric tons.

They will be designed to transport a range of cargo. Each vessel will be equipped with a stern ramp and fixed internal ramps connecting three cargo decks.

Construction of the vessels is scheduled to begin in June and November 2027. Launch dates are planned for May and October 2028, with final delivery expected in September 2028 and January 2029. Each vessel is expected to employ approximately 50 crew members.

The new vessels will give work to about 50 persons onboard. We hope to be able to put the vessels under Finnish flag. As our other roros the new vessels will have high Finnish/Swedish ice-class 1A

… said the company in a statement.

To remind, earlier this month, LD Armateurs launched the Spirit of Toulouse, the first of its new generation of RoRo ships for Airbus, featuring six 35-meter-high Norsepower rotors and dual-fuel engines capable of running on e-/bio-methanol.
