Evos has begun a major expansion of its methanol and ethanol storage facilities at the Port of Rotterdam, aiming to add five new storage tanks with a combined capacity of 67,500 m³, along with a new pump station.

The expansion will allow Evos Rotterdam to increase handling of methanol and ethanol for both traditional industrial uses and the growing market for cleaner marine fuels. In parallel, the Port of Rotterdam Authority will construct a new jetty and supporting quay infrastructure to facilitate operations.

While methanol remains widely used in the chemical sector, especially for formaldehyde production, Europe is increasingly shifting toward low-carbon alternatives such as bio-methanol and e-methanol. Demand for methanol as a marine fuel is expected to grow in the early 2030s as environmental regulations tighten.

By investing in the construction of a new jetty and quay wall, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is creating the essential infrastructure to enable the safe and efficient handling of cleaner fuels, such as methanol

… explained Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The facility expansion is scheduled to become operational in early 2028.

The project also aligns with broader European decarbonization efforts. Rising use of renewable ethanol in road fuels and alcohol-based feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuel are expected to drive higher ethanol imports. According to the partners, the new infrastructure will strengthen Rotterdam’s role as a hub for low-carbon fuels and support the energy transition.

To remind, according to theGlobal Green Shipping Development Report (2024–2025) report by the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI), the methanol refueling volume of Rotterdam Port increased rapidly, with a year-on-year growth of 426% in 2024 and 894% in the first half of 2025.

Our long-term ‘transition partnerships’ strategy is all about progress and shared wins. By developing this project in close partnership with the Port of Rotterdam, we are ahead of the curve to support our customers in both industry and shipping as the energy transition accelerates

… said Daan Vos, CEO of Evos.
