China Voices Concerns Over Proposal to Revert Darwin Port Back to Australia

SYDNEY, May 26 (Reuters) – the Chinese ambassador in Canberra has voiced strong objections to Australia’s plan to return Darwin port to local ownership, arguing that the Chinese firm currently managing the port should not face repercussions. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously announced during his election campaign that his management is exploring options to reclaim the port from its Chinese operator on grounds of national interest.

Back in 2015, Australia leased Darwin Port for a staggering 99 years to Landbridge Group, a decision that drew criticism from then-U.S. President Barack Obama. This port holds strategic significance as it hosts around 2,000 U.S. Marines who conduct training exercises there for half the year.

Ambassador Xiao Qian emphasized in a recent statement from the Chinese embassy that Landbridge has made notable investments and positively impacted the local economy. He argued, “Such contributions should be recognized rather than penalized. It raises ethical concerns when an unprofitable lease is challenged onyl after it becomes lucrative.”

In an interview with ABC Radio last month, Albanese reiterated his commitment to ensuring Australian control over the port and mentioned that if necessary, he would consider government intervention to purchase it directly if no private buyers emerged.

However, Landbridge has firmly stated that they are not interested in selling the port at this time. Simultaneously occurring, Australia continues enhancing its northern military facilities as part of deepening defense ties with the United states; these bases will accommodate U.S. bombers and fighter jets on a rotational basis.
