Construction Kicks Off for Madrid Airport Metro Expansion
SPAIN: On May 19, Metro de Madrid kicked off the construction of an extension for Line 5 that will connect directly to Madrid-Barajas airport.
This aspiring €181 million project will stretch approximately 1.7 kilometers underground from Alameda de Osuna to the airport, where it will integrate with the existing Line 8 station serving terminals T1,T2,and T3—this station is set for a makeover.
the construction team includes FCC, Sacyr, and Becsa. One of the tricky parts? They need to prevent any ground sinking while tunneling beneath major highways M-11 and M-14. Instead of using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) for this short distance—which would be too costly—they’ve opted for a different approach.
The plan involves cut-and-cover tunneling at the airport site. Hear, Line 5 will end at a new building designed by Estudio Lamela on the west side of terminal T2.
This shared station with Line 8 will feature four tracks and three platforms within a spacious box measuring around 20,000 cubic meters topped with an extraordinary glazed roof spanning 1,630 square meters. The grand opening is expected in 2028.
Around 40,000 employees work at this bustling airport hub that welcomed over 66 million travelers in just one year!
