Exploring the Future: A Deep Dive into America's Infrastructure Landscape in 2025
According to a recent publication by the Coalition for America’s Gateways & Trade Corridors, elaine Nessle, the executive director, is closely monitoring the advancements in transportation infrastructure initiatives nationwide.
“We’re finally seeing some positive momentum after years of stagnation,” Nessle remarks. She highlights that this shift comes after a long-standing backlog of necessary funding for vital infrastructure upgrades began to ease with the enactment of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021. This legislation has sparked what she describes as “a significant surge” in projects, although she emphasizes that we are still catching up and much more investment is essential.
Numerous projects have kicked off thanks to this law signed by President Biden; though, many others remain in limbo awaiting financial support. Some public agencies have received notifications about their approved funding but are still waiting to finalize grant agreements that would unlock those funds. “It’s fair to say there’s been quite a drawn-out process,” Nessle adds.
Critics have pointed out that while the 2021 funding initiative was crucial, it didn’t address streamlining federal approvals for these infrastructure endeavors concurrently. Nessle explains that this issue is intricate and involves various government bodies and private stakeholders—especially concerning large-scale projects prioritized by CAGTC members. One suggestion she offers for expediting progress is providing a template for funding agreements at the time awards are announced so agencies can start gathering necessary information right away.
Looking ahead, will infrastructure enhancements continue if trump returns to office? Nessle notes Trump has expressed interest in investing in significant projects. Though, ongoing significant cuts to federal employment could hinder project approvals at the federal level. “We need sufficient oversight on documentation promptly,” she stresses.
