Indore metro Super Priority Corridor opens

As reported by Madhya Pradesh metro Rail Corp, the Indore metro’s ‘Super Priority Corridor’ officially began passenger services on June 1.This launch followed Prime Minister narendra Modi’s virtual inauguration of the city’s inaugural line, coinciding with the festivity of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar’s 300th birth anniversary.

The Yellow Line starts with a 5.9 km elevated stretch connecting Gandhi Nagar to Veerangana Jhalkari Bai, featuring five stations named after influential women. Interestingly, the first train service was exclusively for women passengers. Ultimately, this line will be part of a larger circular route spanning 31.6 km and encompassing 29 stations, including one at the airport.

“Today marks a significant milestone as Madhya Pradesh welcomes its first metro service,” Modi stated during his address. “Indore is already recognized worldwide for its cleanliness; now it will also gain recognition for its metro connectivity. Work in Bhopal is also advancing swiftly.”

The project received approval from both state and national authorities back in October 2018, with construction kicking off in September of the following year. In a notable advancement in early 2022, Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corp awarded Alstom a contract worth €387 million to supply and maintain an array of trainsets along with advanced signaling systems for both Indore and Bhopal metros.

The manufacturing of thes trainsets is taking place at Alstom’s facility in Savli,Gujarat; they delivered their first unit to Indore by august 2023—just over a year after receiving the go-ahead to start production. To date, out of an order for twenty-five units designated for Indore, fourteen have been delivered alongside eight sets intended for bhopal. Alstom has committed to providing maintenance services under their FlexCare Perform program for fifteen years.

The sleek stainless steel trains are designed to accommodate up to fifty seated passengers and three hundred standing ones while ensuring accessibility through dedicated spaces for individuals with reduced mobility.

The trains can reach speeds up to eighty kilometers per hour and are built with safety features that prioritize eco-friendliness by minimizing hazardous materials usage while incorporating energy-efficient systems like regenerative braking and smart lighting solutions developed by knorr-bremse.

A robust communication system enables high-speed data transfer that supports automatic track inspections along with continuous CCTV monitoring—allowing real-time communication between operators and control centers while enhancing safety measures such as unattended object detection which aids passenger counting during emergencies.

Additionally, Alstom has implemented its Urbalis Forward CBTC signaling technology alongside telecoms infrastructure while committing seven years towards comprehensive maintenance support.

  • “Across Madhya Pradesh,” Modi added enthusiastically,” extensive railway enhancements are underway! Just recently approved was the transformation of Ratlam – Nagda into four lines which will facilitate more trains running smoothly through this busy corridor.” He further mentioned that plans have also been greenlit regarding the new railway link between Indore – Manmad.”
