Dynamic New Rail Yard Revolutionizes Freight Operations

According to a recent announcement, a new railcar holding yard has been inaugurated at the Crane Army ammunition Activity (CAAA) in Indiana.

This facility is an integral part of the Joint Munitions Command, which is responsible for various tasks including receiving, inspecting, storing, and disposing of conventional ammunition and missiles. The newly established holding yard aims to enhance the management of surplus and unusable munitions—frequently enough referred to as ‘retrograde’ operations—and boost shipping capabilities.

“With this new rail holding yard at Crane, we can now enjoy greater flexibility in our railroad operations,” remarked Robert england, the railroad operations supervisor at CAAA. He emphasized that this advancement allows for simultaneous execution of multiple retrograde missions alongside shipping tasks when needed. The official opening took place on May 19.

The expanded net explosive weight area also ensures that all operations involving explosives are conducted safely and efficiently without needless handling of loaded railcars.
