Tribute to a Maritime Pioneer: Remembering Jim Lawrence's Lasting Impact

According to a recent publication by lloyd’s List, jim Lawrence, a prominent figure in the U.S. maritime sector and the visionary behind the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) conference, passed away on Sunday following a brief illness. Over his impressive career spanning more than thirty years, Lawrence transformed the CMA conference into an essential gathering for maritime professionals and was celebrated for advocating international shipping’s vital role in America’s economy.

As the chairman of Marine Money, he created a respected journal focused on ship finance and maritime investments that grew into global conferences. In 1990, he also co-founded MTI network, which specializes in crisis communications tailored for the maritime industry. His contributions were recognized when he received the U.S. Coast Guard’s Distinguished Public Service Award in 2019 for his exceptional leadership and commitment to international shipping.

In 2018, Lawrence handed over management of CMA to Informa but remained involved as an advisor. His passing was confirmed by MTI Networks on june 1st after his short illness.

Lawrence was not just known for his professional achievements; he was also an early supporter of gCaptain.com—an autonomous platform dedicated to maritime journalism—helping amplify its presence within industry circles. The team at MTI Networks expressed their sorrow over his loss: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce our dear friend Jim Lawrence has passed away,” they stated. He had been a beloved member of their community who provided invaluable guidance during numerous high-profile incidents both domestically and internationally.

Described as energetic and knowledgeable about all things shipping-related—from climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to offering sensitive advice—Lawrence left an indelible mark on those who knew him professionally and personally alike. While many will miss his vibrant spirit and relentless drive, MTI Network remains committed to supporting clients worldwide under new leadership from Darrell wilson (USCG retired), Jon Chia, and David Solsbery.

Our thoughts are with Jill and their family during this arduous time as we remember Jim’s meaningful impact on the maritime world.
