Revolutionizing Rail Construction: The Advancements of Robotic Welding Technology

According to a recent publication by railway Gazette International, Robel Rail Automation, in collaboration with ProRail and contractors VolkerRail and Strukton Rail, is making strides in the advancement of an automated rail welding robot. What began as a conceptual idea for robotic maintenance is now becoming a reality, as noted by Strukton.

The innovative welding robot created by Robel is cleverly designed within containers that are mounted on standard flat wagons. This machine can efficiently weld both regular rails and switch components during nighttime or adverse weather conditions. It operates tirelessly with remarkable precision and consistency, potentially allowing it to work on one track while keeping another track operational.

The performance of the robot has been under continuous observation for nearly a year through eight completed welds, yielding encouraging results according to Strukton. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the IAF rail infrastructure trade show held in Germany last May to further this development.
