Siemens Mobility Unveils Innovative Last-Mile Battery Vectron and Secures New Orders at Transport Logistic

As reported by Siemens Mobility, their standout feature at the Transport Logistic 2025 trade fair in Munich was the Vectron AC electric locomotive equipped with a battery module designed for last-mile operations. This innovative approach aims to provide a greener alternative for shunting and other tasks where overhead electrification is absent.

The high-voltage lithium-ion battery system is engineered to manage charging and discharging efficiently through an advanced battery management system.

“This locomotive merges state-of-the-art technology with eco-friendliness,” noted Steffen Bobsien, Vice-President of Locomotives & Passenger Coaches at siemens Mobility.

The first two Vectron locomotives featuring these battery modules were ordered by JeMyn from widmer Rail Services in february, with financing facilitated by Raiffeisen Schweiz. These units are set to be delivered in 2027 after securing type approval across Germany,Austria, and Switzerland.

Evolving Technology

Siemens also introduced its Smart Asset suite on June 2, which enhances every Vectron locomotive’s operational efficiency and availability. Additionally, they showcased Railcover—a modular service package—and MoBase, an online marketplace for spare parts. The Railigent X platform supports predictive maintenance and fleet optimization as well.

Brenner Corridor Developments

A significant moment occurred during Transport Logistic when a Vectron MS locomotive was officially handed over to Autostrada del Brennero Group’s rail Traction Company (RTC). RTC has placed orders for four of these powerful locos capable of reaching speeds up to 160 km/h while inrail has ordered two more. These locomotives will operate along the Brenner corridor and will gain authorization across multiple countries including Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary among others.

“Investing in these locomotives aligns with our long-term vision for robust cross-border rail transport that bridges infrastructure gaps between European nations,” stated RTC CEO Martin Ausserdorfer. He emphasized that using one type of locomotive across various countries is vital for integrating Europe’s railway network—especially focusing on enhancing services through the Mediterranean region via the SCAN-MED corridor centered around the brenner Base Tunnel. p>Citing comments from Christian Bernreiter, Bavaria’s Transport Minister present at the handover event: “We must enhance infrastructure along cross-Alpine routes; this includes constructing new access routes essential for both Bavarian commerce and international traffic.” p>Vectrons Headed to France h3 >On june 3rd , Alpha Trains alongside Siemens Mobility celebrated a symbolic handover marking their first batch of Vectrons destined for France under a framework agreement established back in July . This initial order consists of thirty-five diverse types including both standard MS models and also Dual Mode variants . p >The first units are anticipated by late twenty-six , with regulatory approval expected shortly thereafter . These locomotives will traverse key corridors connecting North-South routes through several countries such as Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Italy , Belgium , Netherlands before finally reaching Luxembourg . p >Alpha Trains initially began ordering Vectrons back in twenty-sixteen ; thus far they have received sixty-two out of eighty-two total requests made so far . A maintenance contract signed earlier this year now extends coverage into Belgium & France too! p >Growing Demand Across Central & Eastern Europe h3 >

div >During Transport Logistic Polish leasing firm Cargounit announced plans to acquire twenty-two additional Vectrons scheduled between twenty-five -twenty-six years ahead! This includes twelve units under existing agreements plus ten more funded via Poland’s National Recovery Plan initiative! P >Cargounit has previously secured eighty-eight MS locos alongside eighteen Smartron models too! P >“Our investments reflect increasing demand within intermodal/passenger sectors throughout Central/Eastern Europe,” remarked CEO Łukasz Boroń adding “Vectron MS engines deliver reliability meeting client expectations while our full-service leasing model maximizes fleet uptime.” Depending on specifications chosen Cargounit’s new acquisitions will receive approvals spanning multiple nations like Poland,Germany, the Netherlands etc..
