Alireza Tangsiri, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated that the naval forces are keeping a “full 24-hour intelligence dominance” over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime chokepoints in the world between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
He added that the surveillance in the Strait of Hormuz is “comprehensive at surface, aerial and even sub-surface levels.”
The ‘purpose-driven drills’, as the Navy called them, ensure that ships can safely pass through the waterway, given that 80 oil tankers and container vessels cross it every day
The drills are being conducted in the Persian Gulf as well. Tangsiri called the islands in the Hormuz Strait and Persian Gulf “impregnable fortresses,’ stating that protecting them was the duty of the IRGC Navy, which undertakes annual exercises to maintain security in the region.
He said that IRGC units train to intervene, inspect or seize illegal vessels in the Hormuz Strait and Persian Gulf.
An exercise called “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz”
