Greece’s population continues to age, according to the latest report by Eurostat, a development that has more-or-less been affirmed over the past two decades in various other studies and statistical figures.
Specifically, Eurostat shows that in a decade the average age of living people in the country increased by 3.8 years, reaching 47.2 years.
As of Jan. 1, 2025, the average age of the population of the European Union (EU) reached 44.9 years. This figure means that half of the EU population was over 44.9 years old, while the other half was younger. Across the EU, the average age ranged from 39.6 years in Ireland to 49.1 years in Italy.
At EU level, the average age has increased by 2.1 years since 2015, when it was 42.8 years. An increase was recorded in all EU countries, except Germany and Malta (-0.4 years each).
Population ageing was most pronounced in Slovakia and Cyprus, where the average age increased by 4.0 years, followed by Italy (+3.9 years), Greece and Poland (each +3)
