Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Haris Theoharis will represent Greece at the Gaza Peace Council as an observer.
Two other European nations, Cyprus and Italy will also participate as observers in Donald Trump’s initiative, which was announced by the U.S. President last February.
The Gaza peace council plan, which is in the process of taking shape, as the U.S. president hopes to expand the number of members on the council board.
The initiative is presented as an international mechanism focused on supporting and overseeing peace initiatives in regions around the world with active military conflicts.
It was founded by U.S. President Donald Trump in late January, with its founding charter signed on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Trump will serve as its president for life, regardless of the outcome of future U.S. elections. According to the Council, its stated aim is “to resolve global conflicts.”
Countries seeking a permanent seat on the body — which critics have described as an attempt to create an “alternative United Nations” — will be required to contribute $1 billion.
