IMO urges swift action following UN Ocean Conference commitments

Following the conclusion of the United Nations Ocean Conference (9–13 June, Nice, France), IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has called for countries to swiftly translate their commitments into concrete and measurable action to protect the world’s oceans and ensure sustainable maritime practices.

Mr. Dominguez noted that it will take all stakeholders coming together, sharing information, and aligning actions to bridge differences and drive progress.

He emphasized IMO’s longstanding role in promoting regulatory frameworks and technical support to help Member States tackle environmental challenges linked to shipping.

The outcome document recognized the critical role of maritime transport and infrastructure in supporting global trade, ensuring food and energy security, addressing the climate crisis, especially through GHG emission reductions in the shipping sector.

The IMO now urges the international community to build on this momentum and deliver tangible progress by aligning national, regional, and global maritime policies with urgent environmental and sustainability goals.
