Bilbao Port awards Solar Project

The Port Authority of Bilbao has awarded an €11.48 million contract to build four solar photovoltaic (PV) plants within the port area. The project includes engineering, construction, and a two-year maintenance agreement.
A joint venture made up of Viuda de Sainz, Radimer Servicios Energéticos, Achiles Ingeniería Fotovoltaica, and Solar 360 (Repsol and Movistar) will carry out the work. The contract covers sites at Zierbena Dock, the Santurtzi breakwater, the ferry terminal at A-6 Dock, and the Olatua cruise terminal in Getxo. The total installed capacity will exceed 4,200 kWp.
Also, construction is expected to take 18 months. Once completed, the solar plants will help power the port’s onshore power supply (OPS) system, part of the broader BilbOPS project.
BilbOPS aims to allow ships to plug into clean shore power while at berth, cutting emissions and noise. The first phase wraps up in early 2026 and includes 11 OPS connection points with a combined 30 MW capacity. The second phase, now underway, runs through 2027 and will bring total investment to over €50 million. Funding comes from EU programs and an €80 million loan from the European Investment Bank.
From 2027, ships at berth in Bilbao will receive 100% renewable power, either generated at the port or sourced from certified green providers.
