The new special commissioner of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea Port Authority takes office

In port of Gioia Tauro, Paolo Piacenza officially assumed his role as the new Extraordinary Commissioner of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas.
On his first day in office, he welcomed Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, and Roberto Occhiuto, President of the Calabria Region, during an official visit focused on exploring the port’s logistical, industrial, and energy potential.
The visit began with a tour of the MedCenter Container Terminal, where the delegation was briefed on the port’s capabilities.
Emphasis was placed on Gioia Tauro’s unique status as Italy’s only port capable of accommodating the world’s largest vessels, over 400 meters long and 60 meters wide.
Reflecting on the visit, Commissioner Piacenza remarked that the presence of Minister Urso and President Occhiuto today further underlined the port’s strategic role in regional development as Gioia Tauro is more than infrastructure, it’s a living system of operations, people, and shared goals, capable of generating real value for the territory.
Piacenza will temporarily maintain his role as Secretary General of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority while serving as Special Commissioner in Gioia Tauro.
He also stressed that he would meet with the management to initiate a working group that will be immediately operational and dedicated to ensuring effective administrative action and driving the shared vision for the future.
