Newbuilding moves: Ningbo Ocean and Evergreen expand fleets

According to DynaLiners, Ningbo Ocean has confirmed an order for four 4,300 TEU containerships from Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard. The deal had been anticipated as part of the carrier’s fleet expansion strategy. The new vessels are due for delivery in 2029 and will strengthen Ningbo Ocean’s mid-size segment.
The order comes at a time when regional and global carriers are looking to modernize fleets and prepare for future trade growth. The 4,300 TEU size remains attractive for both intra-Asia and secondary global routes, offering flexibility while meeting tightening efficiency standards.
In parallel, Evergreen is moving forward with plans for a much larger order. The Taiwanese giant is eyeing 12 to 14 newbuilds in the 14,000 TEU range. The ships will be LNG or dual-fuel powered, aligning with the company’s decarbonization targets. TradeWinds reports that Evergreen has already approached shipyards in China, South Korea, and Japan to discuss the program.
If confirmed, Evergreen’s order would mark one of the largest newbuilding deals of the year and signal continued confidence in long-haul container demand.
Together, these moves underline how carriers are balancing fleet renewal with environmental compliance, while preparing for both regional and global cargo growth.
