Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) remained largely unchanged in the third week of February, dropping just $2 to $555 per 40ft container. The index is now 10% lower compared with the same week last year.

The IACI is a weighted average of spot rates across 18 major intra-Asia trade routes. It covers key Northeast Asian markets (Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan), Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam) and Southwest Asia (India, UAE). Terminal handling charges are not included.

Spot rates were stable on several key routes:

  • Busan to Shanghai: $47 per FEU

  • Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai: $50 per FEU

  • Jakarta to Shanghai: $54 per FEU

  • Shanghai to Yokohama: $780 per FEU

  • Yokohama to Shanghai: $115 per FEU

Some routes saw minor declines:

  • Shanghai to Jawaharlal Nehru: down 2% to $800 per FEU

  • Shanghai to Singapore: down 9% to $655 per FEU

  • Shanghai to Tanjung Pelepas: down 2% to $1,124 per FEU

Drewry expects rates to remain low in the short term. A rebound is anticipated after the Lunar New Year as production resumes and backlogs build.

The IACI is updated weekly and provides a benchmark for actual spot container freight rates within Asia.

The data are according to Drewry and as Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) reported.
