Matson to introduce enhanced intermodal cargo security program
In response to rising theft across the intermodal industry, Matson, Inc. has announced a new cargo security program.

In response to rising theft across the intermodal industry, Matson, Inc. has announced a new cargo security program in partnership with BNSF Railway and War-Lok. Starting in the second quarter of 2026, this initiative will add two layers of protection to the majority of Matson’s international intermodal cargo at no additional cost to customers.

Dual-Layer Protection Strategy

The program focuses on containers moving from Los Angeles to key inland destinations, including Chicago, Memphis, and Dallas.

  • War-Lok Security Devices: Matson will deploy these specialized locking devices on every international container moving from Los Angeles to BNSF network destinations.

  • Lower-Well Positioning: Through a unique agreement with BNSF Railway, Matson containers will be positioned in the lower well of international intermodal rail cars. This placement makes the container doors virtually inaccessible while on the tracks.

Geographic Reach

The enhanced security measures will cover:

  • Shipments from Los Angeles to all BNSF network destinations.

  • Cargo moving through the Chicago gateway to select Eastern U.S. destinations up to the BNSF interchange point.

Leveraging Expedited Services

This security program complements Matson’s existing expedited Transpacific services, including the China-Long Beach Express (CLX) and Matson Asia Express (MAX). By combining industry-leading ocean transit times with enhanced inland security, Matson aims to set a new standard for cargo protection.

“We’re raising the bar with what we believe to be the most comprehensive carrier-led intermodal security program in the market,” said John Lauer, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Matson.
