The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) welcomed the outcome of the 84th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), where IMO Member States agreed to continue intensive discussions aimed at reaching a global agreement on shipping decarbonisation as soon as possible.
As explained, amid the growing complexity of the industry’s decarbonisation efforts, despite notable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Chamber views this development as a positive and constructive step. It further stressed the importance of maintaining a clear focus on delivering a practical, effective and globally applicable framework.
The Chamber expresses its hope that all sides involved in the discussions will continue demonstrating the same spirit of cooperation and constructive engagement, in order to achieve a pragmatic and implementable global solution that ensures a level playing field for international shipping while meeting environmental objectives.
…the Chamber’s statement highlights.
Alexandros Josephides, Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC), participated in MEPC 84 as part of the delegation of the Shipping Deputy Ministry. The Chamber commended the Ministry for its dedicated efforts and strong coordination of both the national delegation and EU Member States under the Cyprus EU Presidency.
In an exclusive interview to SAFETY4SEA, Josephides emphasized that achieving a sustainable future for shipping requires coordinated action across all stakeholders, noting that the burden of decarbonisation should not fall solely on shipowners, even as it remains the industry’s most pressing challenge.
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts toward realistic and sustainable solutions for global shipping.
To remind, on 29 April, EU Ministers endorsed the Lefkosia Declaration, which focuses on enhancing seafarers’ education and training, promoting reskilling and upskilling for the green and digital transition, encouraging maritime careers, and advancing gender equality within the sector.
