BNSF and Metra extend Chicago rail service for 10 years

BNSF Railway and Metra have signed a new agreement to extend commuter rail service on the BNSF Line in the Chicago area for another 10 years.

The deal continues a long-standing partnership that dates back to 1983. It includes an initial five-year term starting April 1, 2026, with an automatic five-year extension unless either party opts out.

Under the agreement, BNSF will continue operating commuter trains with its crews seven days a week on Metra’s busiest route between Chicago and Aurora.

“BNSF is proud to continue our long-standing partnership with Metra through this new agreement, which strengthens a relationship built over decades of collaboration,” said Jim Tylick of BNSF.

“Metra and BNSF have been collaborative partners for decades, working together to make sure residents are well-served with safe, reliable, fast, and affordable service,” said Jim Derwinski, CEO of Metra.
