In the UK,a new initiative has emerged from Network Rail and Capital City College in London: the Network Rail Academy. This program is designed for young individuals aged 16 to 19, aiming to kickstart their careers in the rail sector.

The academy focuses on equipping participants wiht foundational skills that lead into various apprenticeship opportunities, including roles like rail engineering technician and rail infrastructure operator. Students will pursue engineering qualifications at levels 1, 2, or 3 while gaining hands-on experience in the industry.They’ll also receive mentorship from seasoned Network Rail professionals and training on vital skills such as job interview strategies and effective communication.

“The rail sector offers incredible career prospects but needs enthusiastic talent to thrive,” remarked Richard Turner, who oversees Apprenticeships at Network Rail. He emphasized that collaborating with local educational institutions allows the academy to provide practical skills that are beneficial not only for Network Rail but also for a wide range of employers across different fields.

Sharon Wallace, Assistant Principal at Capital City College’s Enfield Center, added her thoughts: “Our goal is to inspire young peopel eager for education or job opportunities. The Network Rail Academy serves as an excellent launchpad—offering hands-on learning experiences alongside professional guidance and a clear pathway into skilled employment.”
