Alexandria Metro Train Contract Secured as Assembly Facility Readies for Launch
In egypt, a significant contract worth €275 million has been inked between the national Authority for Tunnels and the National Egyptian Railway Industries Co. This agreement involves the production of 21 nine-car metro trainsets specifically for Alexandria.
This announcement came during Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s visit to the NERIC facility in East Port Said on May 11. The project is set to unfold over a span of three years and two months, followed by a decade dedicated to maintenance, which includes spare parts supply and one major overhaul of the vehicles.
The Prime Minister highlighted that there are plans from the Ministry of Transport to roll out several enduring mass transit initiatives in Alexandria, which holds the title of Egypt’s second most populated city.
Metro Advancement Progress
The first phase of Alexandria’s metro system spans approximately 21.7 kilometers and is being developed by Orascom Construction alongside Colas Rail under a hefty €1.3 billion contract awarded in september 2023. This initiative aims to upgrade an existing suburban railway line stretching from Misr station in downtown Alexandria all the way to Abu Qir in the northeast.
NERIC Plant Launching Soon
During his visit, NERIC’s Managing Director Ahmed El-mofty shared exciting news: production at their plant is expected to kick off by July this year.
Nestled within a public-private partnership established back in 2020, NERIC brings together various stakeholders including Egypt’s Sovereign Fund and Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority among others. The collaboration wiht Hyundai rotem began last year focuses on local manufacturing capabilities; notably,they will also assemble eight-car trainsets for Cairo’s metro lines at this facility.
The plant will cover around 30 hectares once fully operational and is projected to create about five thousand jobs—an significant boost for local employment!
Aiming High with Local Production
This aspiring project unfolds over three phases: initial stages focus on producing electric locomotives, urban rail vehicles, as well as freight wagons aimed at serving not just Egypt but potentially tapping into broader African markets too.
