Transformative Journey Begins: The Launch of Phoenix's Light Rail Expansion

According to a recent report from Valley Metro, over 5,000 individuals gathered to celebrate the launch of the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub light rail in Phoenix on June 7.This new line stretches for 8.9 kilometers and connects Downtown Phoenix to Baseline Road via Central Avenue and 1st Avenue.

The extension introduces eight new stops, a park-and-ride facility with space for 110 vehicles, dedicated bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, and over 550 trees along with desert-pleasant landscaping.

This expansion has restructured the light rail network into two distinct lines: Line A running east-west and Line B heading north-south,both intersecting at the Downtown Phoenix Hub.

The project’s total cost was $1.34 billion, with federal grants covering more than half of that amount. AECOM designed the extension while Kiewit handled construction. Additionally, Siemens Mobility contributed by providing an extra 14 S700 light rail vehicles on top of the initial order of eleven made in 2017.

“This project is a significant step towards enhancing connectivity for our residents,” remarked Mayor Kate Gallego. “It not only establishes our frist dual-line rail system but also promotes safer streets through new bike lanes and public art installations—linking people to jobs and leisure activities throughout the Valley.”

The extension is projected to increase daily ridership by over 8,000 passengers on top of the current average of about 32,000 trips per day.

“Investments in infrastructure like this are crucial for fostering connectivity and prosperity,” stated Congressman Greg stanton. “As we look ahead toward expanding westward with future light rail projects and extending streetcar services in East Valley areas, we’re witnessing an exciting chapter in Phoenix’s evolution—one that requires ongoing investment.” p> div >
