Poti Intermodal Terminal: A New Hub for the Middle Corridor's Connectivity

As reported by a recent publication from the Black Sea port authorities, the Poti TransTerminal multimodal terminal officially opened its doors with the arrival of its inaugural container train on June 9. This facility, developed through international collaboration, aims to become a pivotal hub along the Middle Corridor that links China and Central Asia to Europe.

The terminal boasts an extraordinary annual capacity of 80,000 TEU, with plans for future expansion up to 200,000 TEU. It features storage space for 4,000 TEU and includes a railway track stretching over 3.3 km that can accommodate around 120 wagons. Additionally, it is equipped with gantry cranes capable of handling up to 50 containers per hour.

This $30 million initiative was funded by private investors from Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan while construction was carried out by China Railway’s Bureau Group.

Mamuka Merkviladze, one of the shareholders involved in this project remarked that this terminal will significantly transform not just Georgia’s logistics scene but also impact the broader region positively. He expressed confidence in their investment strategy which reflects their belief in the area’s potential as an essential logistics link across Eurasia.

Daniyar Abulgazin from Kazakh company PTC Holding described Poti TransTerminal as emblematic of a new era in logistics—one built entirely from scratch rather than relying on existing structures. He highlighted their willingness to invest despite risks taken along this journey while affirming faith in Kazakhstan’s vital role within Eurasia.
The Chairman of PTC Holding’s management board Bekmurat Naizabekov added that they didn’t merely construct another facility; they initiated future-ready infrastructure designed for sustainability and open international cooperation—positioning this terminal at the heart of regional cargo flows.
