IRS backs record submarine refit

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) supported the fastest-ever refit of an EKM-class submarine. Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) completed the job on July 21, setting a national record.
The Indian Navy confirmed it was the quickest turnaround for this class. That means more uptime for the Navy’s submarine fleet.
Also, IRS provided quality assurance during the refit. It oversaw work on the hull, machinery, and electrical systems. This marks the first time a classification society handled QA for a sub refit in India.
”We are proud to have contributed to this landmark achievement by HSL. IRS’s involvement from the outset ensured that quality and safety benchmarks were met in line with naval expectations,” said Saikat Roychowdhury, Head of Operations, IRS.
Moreover, IRS’s Head Defence stated: ”IRS remains committed to delivering world-class QA standard services in support of all the projects of Indian Defence and Paramilitary forces and strengthen its cooperation with them in all spheres.”
Additionally, the project was part of India’s push for defence self-reliance. HSL brought over 30 years of experience to the table. It worked closely with Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and the Eastern Naval Command.
IRS ran strict inspections throughout the process. The success highlights its growing role in naval projects. It’s a key step in India’s path toward strategic autonomy.
