CEMS and GRSE launch Maritime Skill Development Programme in Kolkata

The Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) has inaugurated a new extension centre at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) in Kolkata, under GRSE’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The facility, located at GRSE’s Taratala unit, will serve as a hub for maritime skill development and industry-ready training.

Through this collaboration, CEMS and GRSE will deliver a six-month programme for 100 candidates in four high-demand disciplines: Welding, Electrical, Structural Fittings, and Pipe Fittings. Training will combine three months of shop-floor learning with three months of on-the-job experience at GRSE facilities, ensuring participants gain practical, hands-on expertise.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to bridge the skills gap in India’s maritime sector by providing young professionals with direct pathways to employment in shipbuilding and allied industries.

“This partnership with GRSE marks an important step in our mission to bridge the skills gap in the maritime industry,” said Cdr Gopi Krishna Sivvam IN (Retd.), Chief Operating Officer of CEMS. “By combining CEMS’ training expertise with GRSE’s strong industrial base, we aim to provide young professionals with industry-relevant skills that will open doors to sustainable careers and strengthen India’s shipbuilding capabilities.”

The programme reinforces CEMS’ leadership in maritime training while highlighting GRSE’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals to drive India’s maritime economy.
