The government, local authorities, the Hellenic Coast Guard and refineries are on alert over the intense smell in the southern suburbs of Attica. Disturbance has been caused in municipalities of the Southern Suburbs of Attica due to the smell of gas that existed in the atmosphere and became particularly noticeable, mainly in the areas of the coastal front.

As reports of a strong odor continued to emerge, the Hellenic Coast Guard has been placed on heightened alert. So far, no suspicious maritime incidents, sea pollution, or anomalies have been detected. The Coast Guard has conducted extensive checks with a specific focus on passing gas carriers, though no concerning findings have emerged.

The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued a clarifying statement, noting: “In communication with the Coast Guard Operations Center, in extensive checks it has carried out on passing gas carriers, no relevant incident has been reported.”

The government is monitoring the issue in cooperation with the relevant agencies in order to determine the source of the odor.

Officials are also in contact with the country’s energy bodies and other relevant agencies to determine whether the odor may be linked to a technical issue, an environmental factor or another
