METRANS launches green intermodal logistics hub in Szeged

METRANS has officially started construction of a major intermodal logistics hub in Szeged, marking a significant green logistics investment in Hungary. The project will become METRANS’ second hinterland terminal in the country and is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together national and local officials alongside METRANS management. The new terminal will complement METRANS’ Budapest facility and position Szeged as Hungary’s southern logistics gateway, strengthening links between Central Europe and the Balkans.

The terminal will cover nearly 10 hectares. It will feature four 330-metre loading tracks and two remote-controlled electric gantry cranes. The facility will handle up to six train pairs per day and reach an annual capacity of 300,000 TEU.

METRANS CEO Peter Kiss said the investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to rail and intermodal logistics development in Hungary. He highlighted strong freight growth, domestic investment, and a supportive business environment as key drivers of the project.

The Szeged terminal will support regional industries, including manufacturing, automotive, electronics, FMCG, and e-commerce. It is also expected to attract further investment by improving rail and road connectivity.

The project will create new jobs and help reduce road congestion in the region. By shifting freight from road to rail, the terminal will cut emissions and support METRANS’ goal of carbon-neutral logistics. The company estimates the facility will prevent tens of thousands of tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
